ZAMBIA
map Zambia is a landlocked country in Southern Africa with a population of over 11 million.. Its capital city is LUSAKA

Zambia is a country rich with culture. There are 43 languages spoken in Zambia and over 70 different tribes each with their own unique history. Despite such a diverse cultural ancestry there is very little tribal animosity and in general the Zambian people are peaceful and friendly. Traditional dancing is called Nhow dancing and it is believed that once the masks are pulled over the dancers head they are possessed by spirits. Singing comes naturally to the Zambians and being a predominantly Christian nation there are a multitude of community gospel choirs that can be awe inspiring to hear. The closeness of the communities in Zambia is evident when at the drop of a hat they will break into song in unison to welcome a visitor. Though it has much to offer, has found itself stuck in the poverty trap due mainly to poor health, poor education provision and the effect of the brain drain. With a population of 11.5 million 51% live below the WHO defined poverty line of less than $1 a day and there is a conservative estimate of 16% living with HIV. Tuberculosis, malaria and malnourishment are also rife and account for a significant number of deaths. The average life span is 46 years and there is an 17% chance a child will die before their 5th birthday. However some rays of hope are provided by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the United States President Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief by sponsoring anti - HIV medication in the form of highly active anti - retroviral therapy (HAART) and UNICEF providing vaccinations to vaccinate all children in Zambia. The challenge now is to reach the people in time.
